Description
The Only Strips Scaled for FROG's Low Chlorine and Bromine Levels
FROG Test Strips read the low free chlorine level used in every FROG pool system and the low bromine level used in FROG Serene and FROG Filter Mate hot tubs. One strip also checks pH, total alkalinity and total hardness, so a single dip covers your weekly test.
Standard strips are scaled for conventional chlorine, so a correct FROG reading of 0.5 ppm looks "low" on them. That's how people end up over-chlorinating and burning through cartridges early. These strips put the FROG ideal range right on the bottle. There are 50 strips in a sealed bottle.
Read FROG's Low Sanitizer Range Correctly
FROG minerals let you run a pool at 0.5–1.0 ppm free chlorine and a FROG bromine hot tub at 1.0–2.0 ppm. On these strips that range is labeled IDEAL. On a typical strip it falls in the "low" zone, which pushes people to turn the dial up when nothing is wrong.
Make Cartridges and Bac Pacs Last Longer
When you set the dial from an accurate reading, you stop overfeeding chlorine or bromine. The package notes that the strips help extend the life of FROG pacs and cartridges, which is where most of your water care money goes.
Five Readings From One Dip
Each strip has pads for free chlorine, bromine, total alkalinity, pH and total hardness. Dip, shake once and compare. That's enough to know whether to balance the water, shock it or adjust the dial.
One Bottle for Pool and Hot Tub
If you run a Flippin' FROG in the pool and FROG Serene in the hot tub, one bottle covers both. The chart has a chlorine scale for the pool and a bromine scale for the hot tub.

How to Test With FROG Test Strips
- Pop open the top: Use dry hands. Wet fingers inside the bottle can spoil the remaining strips.
- Dip for 2 seconds: Hold the strip about 6 inches below the surface, away from return jets, the skimmer and the floater.
- Remove pads up and shake once: Keep the pads facing up so the colors don't run together.
- Read against the bottle: Compare in natural daylight, not under shade or porch lights. Read right away, then close the cap tightly.
What the Color Chart Shows
| Test Pad | Chart Scale | Ideal Range Marked on the Bottle |
|---|---|---|
| Free chlorine (pools) | 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 5 ppm | 0.5–1.0 ppm |
| Bromine (hot tubs) | 0, 1, 2, 6, 10 ppm | 1.0–2.0 ppm |
| Total alkalinity | 0, 40, 80, 120, 180, 240 ppm | 80–120 ppm |
| pH | 6.2, 6.8, 7.2, 7.8, 8.4 | 7.2–7.8 |
| Total hardness | 50, 150, 250, 400, 800 ppm | Separate marks for hot tubs (lower band) and pools (higher band) |
Ranges read from the color chart on the FROG Test Strips bottle. For total hardness, follow the target in your FROG system's manual.
How Often to Test
| Situation | How Often |
|---|---|
| New FROG system or new cartridge setting | Daily for the first week, adjusting the dial one setting per day |
| Normal pool or hot tub use | At least once a week |
| After heavy use, rain or adding fresh water | Test the same day |
| After shocking | Wait 24 hours before trusting the sanitizer pad |
Daily start-up testing and one-setting-per-day adjustments come from the Flippin' FROG and FROG Serene manuals. The 24-hour wait after shocking comes from FROG's guidance on strip bleaching.
Compatibility Notes
Before You Buy
- Works with every FROG pool system: Flippin' FROG, Flippin' FROG XL, Pool FROG, FROG Leap, FROG Pool Tender, Instant FROG and FROG EverClean.
- Works in hot tubs that use FROG bromine: FROG Serene floating or in-line systems and FROG Filter Mate with bromine.
- Not for FROG @ease. SmartChlor needs FROG @ease Test Strips, which have an Out Indicator instead of a chlorine pad.
- Hot tubs on a chlorine-based FROG setup should follow the testing directions in that system's manual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular test strips with my FROG system?
You can, but they'll mislead you. Regular strips flag 0.5 ppm chlorine or 1 ppm bromine as low, even though that's right where a FROG system should run. Most people respond by raising the dial and wasting sanitizer.
What's the ideal chlorine or bromine level with FROG?
For FROG pools, free chlorine of 0.5 to 1.0 ppm. For hot tubs using FROG Serene or FROG Filter Mate with bromine, 1.0 to 2.0 ppm. Both bands are marked IDEAL on the bottle.
What's the difference between FROG Test Strips and FROG @ease Test Strips?
These measure free chlorine or bromine and come in a 50-count bottle. FROG @ease strips come 30 to a yellow bottle and swap the chlorine pad for an Out Indicator that shows when a SmartChlor cartridge is empty. Use @ease strips only with @ease.
Which FROG products are these strips made for?
Every FROG pool system, including Flippin' FROG, Flippin' FROG XL, Pool FROG, FROG Leap, FROG Pool Tender, Instant FROG and FROG EverClean, plus FROG Serene and FROG Filter Mate hot tubs on bromine.
My bromine pad reads white. Is that too much or too little?
Too little. FROG's answer to a customer: shock to bring bromine up, check whether the bromine cartridge is empty and replace it if so, or raise it one setting if it still has product. Retest 24 hours after shocking.
Why does the strip look washed out right after I shock?
High levels of shock can bleach the pads, so the sanitizer reading isn't reliable for a while. FROG recommends waiting 24 hours after shocking before you test.
Do FROG Test Strips expire?
Yes. The date is printed on the bottle, and FROG suggests checking it whenever readings seem off. Strips past date, or left with the cap loose, can give false colors.
Does lighting affect the reading?
It can. The package says to always read in natural daylight. Indoor bulbs and deep shade change how the pad colors look, and that matters most at the low end of the chlorine scale.
What if my pH reading falls outside the chart?
The pH scale runs from 6.2 to 8.4. A pad that matches past either end means pH is very low or very high. Retest with a fresh strip in daylight, then correct alkalinity first and pH second before you adjust the FROG dial.
How long will a bottle of 50 strips last?
Testing weekly, about a year for one body of water. Daily start-up testing and a pool plus a hot tub use it faster, so plan on a new bottle each season if you test both.
How do I use the reading to set my FROG dial?
If chlorine or bromine is below the ideal band, raise the cartridge one setting. If it's above, lower it one. Change only one setting per day and test again the next day.
Why are there two ideal marks on the hardness scale?
Pools and hot tubs use different hardness targets, so the bottle marks a lower band for hot tubs and a higher band for pools. Your FROG system's manual gives the exact range.
Can I enter these readings in the FROG app?
Yes. The free FROG Water Care app takes FROG Test Strip values and walks you through what to adjust. It's a quick way to turn a strip reading into a next step.
I use FROG Serene in my hot tub. Do I read the chlorine or bromine scale?
The bromine scale, which runs 0 to 10 ppm. Aim for the IDEAL band at 1 to 2 ppm. The chlorine scale above it is for FROG pools.
What's the best way to store the bottle?
Keep the cap on tight between uses and store it somewhere cool and dry, not in a humid pump shed or by the hot tub. Moisture and heat are what spoil strips early.
Safety Notes
Handle With Care
- Keep the cap tightly closed between uses. Moisture spoils the remaining strips.
- Don't touch the inside of the bottle or the pads with wet fingers.
- Store the bottle in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.
- Strips are a guide for routine care. Always follow the directions on your FROG system and on every chemical you add.
Product Documents
FROG doesn't publish a separate instruction sheet or Safety Data Sheet for its test strips. These manuals explain how to use FROG Test Strips readings with each system.
