Description
The Silver Refill Cartridge That Keeps Your FROG @ease Swim Spa at 0.5–1.0 ppm
This is one replacement SmartChlor Cartridge for the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas. The silver cartridge snaps onto the blue mineral cartridge and releases chlorine on demand, holding free chlorine at a low, steady 0.5–1.0 ppm.
Each cartridge lasts about 3–4 weeks in an average 2,000-gallon swim spa. When the floating system flips over, it's time to click in a new one and set the dial.
Chlorine on Demand, Not in Spikes
Dichlor and trichlor jump when you add them and fall as soon as people swim. SmartChlor forms a reserve that turns into free chlorine only when the water needs it, so the level stays put between cartridge changes.
A Fraction of the Usual Chlorine
Paired with the FROG minerals, SmartChlor sanitizes with up to 75% less chlorine* than the standard 2.0 ppm minimum. FROG says that means softer-feeling water, fewer odors and brighter swimsuits.
A Two-Minute Swap
There's nothing to measure. Pull the empty cartridge, push the new one onto the mineral cartridge until it clicks and turn the dial to your setting.
Buy One at a Time
A single cartridge is handy when you're nearly through a 3 pack, or when you'd rather buy as you go. It's the same cartridge FROG packs in the system box.

How to Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge
- Check that it's empty: The system flips over when SmartChlor is used up. You can also compare a FROG @ease Test Strip with the purple block on the bottle; lighter means replace.
- Remove the old cartridge: Lift the system out, let it drain and separate the empty silver cartridge from the blue mineral cartridge.
- Click in the new one: Line up the tab guides and push the new SmartChlor onto the mineral cartridge until it clicks.
- Set the dial: Turn the dial to 2, 3 or 4 for your swim spa's gallons.
- Float and shock: Return it to the water on its tether and add a packet of FROG Maintain for Swim Spas.

Compatibility Notes
Before You Buy
- Fits only the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas. FROG makes one oval SmartChlor Cartridge for swim spas.
- It doesn't fit FROG @ease hot tub systems, and hot tub SmartChlor cartridges don't fit the swim spa system.
- Must be used with the FROG @ease mineral cartridge. SmartChlor alone won't sanitize a swim spa properly.
- Use FROG @ease Test Strips; standard strips can misread the SmartChlor reserve.
- Shock with FROG Maintain for Swim Spas, not dichlor. Cyanuric acid buildup makes SmartChlor less effective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which SmartChlor Cartridge fits my swim spa?
This one. FROG makes a single oval SmartChlor Cartridge for swim spas, and it's the only one that fits the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas.
How long does one SmartChlor Cartridge last in a swim spa?
About 3 to 4 weeks in an average 2,000-gallon swim spa. Balanced water and a tether help it reach the longer end of that range.
How do I know it's time for a new SmartChlor Cartridge?
The floating system flips over when it's empty. FROG also says you can dip a FROG @ease Test Strip: if the color block is lighter than the purple block on the bottle label, replace the cartridge.
Can I use SmartChlor without the mineral cartridge?
No. FROG says SmartChlor won't work properly by itself. It needs the FROG sanitizing minerals to sanitize the swim spa at the low 0.5–1.0 ppm level.
What is SmartChlor, and how is it different from dichlor?
It's FROG's patented self-regulating chlorine. Dichlor spikes when added and drops with use, while SmartChlor keeps the same sanitizing level from day one until the system flips.
Do I set the dial every time I put in a new cartridge?
Yes. The dial is on the SmartChlor Cartridge, so each new one needs to be turned to your setting: 2, 3 or 4 depending on your gallons.
What water temperature does SmartChlor need?
Keep the swim spa at 80°F or warmer. FROG's manual says to hold at least 80°F, and the cartridge is made to dissolve in heated spa water.
How many cartridges are in this pack?
One. FROG's product page lists 3 cartridges in the box because FROG sells it as a 3 pack, but this listing is a single cartridge. The 3 pack is sold separately at HotTubPirate.com.
What do I do with the empty cartridge?
FROG's directions say to throw it in the trash or recycle it where recycling is available. Don't try to open or refill it.
How many SmartChlor Cartridges will I use in a year?
At 3–4 weeks each, plan on roughly 13 to 17 a year if you use the swim spa year-round. Higher settings, high pH or heavy use mean more.
Chlorine is low but the cartridge isn't empty. What should I do?
First give the floater a shake, since SmartChlor can settle. Then test pH and alkalinity, because SmartChlor only holds 0.5–1.0 ppm in balanced water. Still low? Raise the dial by one number, and make sure the blue mineral side hasn't passed 4 months.
Is the SmartChlor Cartridge the silver one or the blue one?
Silver. The blue cartridge is the FROG mineral cartridge. The silver SmartChlor is the one you replace every few weeks.
Will SmartChlor fade my swimsuit?
It's much gentler than standard chlorine. FROG says SmartChlor's low, time-released level prevents faded swimwear, and the label adds that suit colors stay bright and swim spa surfaces keep their shine.
Should I shock when I change the cartridge?
Yes. FROG recommends a packet of FROG Maintain for Swim Spas once a month or each time you replace the SmartChlor Cartridge.
What's inside a SmartChlor Cartridge?
The label lists two stabilized chlorine compounds: 81.1% 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin and 16.1% 1,3-dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin. Each cartridge holds 1.25 lb and is EPA Reg. No. 53735-14.
Safety Notes
Handle With Care
- The SmartChlor Cartridge label carries the Danger signal word. The chlorine inside is corrosive: it can cause irreversible eye and skin damage and may be fatal if swallowed.
- Never open, break or refill a cartridge. Wear gloves and eye protection if a cartridge is damaged, and wash your hands after handling.
- Strong oxidizer. Never mix with other chemicals, and don't place it in any feeder or device that has held another product.
- If it gets in your eyes, hold them open and rinse gently with water for 15–20 minutes, removing contact lenses after the first 5 minutes, then call a poison control center or doctor.
- Keep spares dry in the original, tightly closed packaging, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from heat, children and pets.
- Toxic to fish and aquatic life. Discard empty cartridges in the trash or recycle where available.
- Read the full label, swim spa manual and Safety Data Sheets before use.
