Description
Close to a Year of SmartChlor for Your FROG @ease In-Line Spa
The FROG @ease In-Line SmartChlor Cartridges 12 Pack is the biggest way to buy SmartChlor: twelve silver, pre-filled chlorine cartridges for Marquis Crown, Artesian Elite and Artesian Island spas and other models with a built-in FROG @ease In-Line holder. Each one pairs with the blue FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge to hold free chlorine at 0.5–1.0 ppm with no cyanuric acid.
At about 3–4 weeks per cartridge, twelve cartridges cover roughly 9 to 11 months of typical soaking, and close to a full year for lighter use. Order once and keep your hot tub chlorine handled for most of the year.
Always used together: pair SmartChlor with the FROG @ease In-Line Mineral Cartridge, the blue cartridge that goes in the top slot and is replaced every 4 months. FROG @ease needs both cartridges to sanitize your water.
Close to a Year of In-Line Chlorine in One Order
Twelve SmartChlor cartridges at about 3–4 weeks each add up to roughly 36–48 weeks of sanitizer. For many households that is most of a year, and lighter users may stretch it to a full year.
It is the simplest way to stop thinking about chlorine: when the test strip says a cartridge is out, swap in the next one and shock with FROG Maintain.
Plan the Year Around Three Mineral Changes
The blue FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge lasts 4 months, so a year of FROG @ease takes three of them. A 12-pack gives you about four SmartChlor cartridges for each mineral cycle, which lines up with typical use. Add a cartridge or two if you soak often or run a larger spa.
Write each mineral change date on the cabinet door and the whole year is planned.
Low-Chlorine Water That Feels Softer
SmartChlor's self-regulating chlorine reserve keeps free chlorine at 0.5–1.0 ppm when pH is 7.2–7.6. That is up to 75% less than the 2.0 ppm ANSI minimum for hot tubs, because FROG minerals share the sanitizing job.
You get clear water with less chlorine smell and less wear on swimsuits, covers and skin.
No Cyanuric Acid, All Year Long
Dichlor granules add cyanuric acid with every dose, and over months it builds up until the water turns cloudy or itchy and needs draining. SmartChlor adds no CYA, so a full year of cartridges will not push your CYA level up.

How to Use Your SmartChlor 12 Pack
- Balance the water first: Bring Total Alkalinity to 80–120 ppm, then pH to 7.2–7.6, and keep Total Hardness at 150–250 ppm. SmartChlor works best and lasts longest in balanced water.
- Turn the jets off: Never open the In-Line cap while the jets are running. Lift the cap, then push the holder down and turn it 1/8 turn counterclockwise to pull it out.
- Remove the spent cartridge: Drain the water out of the old silver cartridge to confirm it is empty, then discard it in the trash or recycle it where available. Do not refill or reuse it.
- Unwrap and set one new cartridge: Take one cartridge from the pack, remove the shrink wrap, hold the bottom and turn the dial to the setting for your hot tub size (see the chart below). Leave the rest sealed.
- Snap it into the holder: Snap the silver SmartChlor cartridge into the bottom slot marked "Bromine or SmartChlor," lining up the indentation with the raised area on the holder. The blue mineral cartridge stays in the top slot marked "Minerals" at setting #6.
- Lock the holder and replace the cap: Line up the holder arrow with the system arrow, push down past the tabs and turn clockwise until it stops. Tug up gently to confirm it is locked.
- Shock with FROG Maintain: Add one dose of FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock each time you change the SmartChlor cartridge, or once a month.
- Test and track: Test weekly with FROG @ease Test Strips. Replace the cartridge when the top tab is lighter than the SmartChlor Out Indicator on the bottle, and replace the mineral cartridge every 4 months.
SmartChlor Dial Setting Chart
| Hot Tub Size | In-Line Setting | Filter Basket Setting |

| 251–300 gallons | 2 | 4 |
| 301–450 gallons | 3 | 5 |
| 451–600 gallons | 4 | 6 |
Set the dial for your spa's water volume. If the cartridge is not empty and chlorine still runs low, turn the dial up one number. If it seems to dispense too fast, turn it down one number.

Compatibility Notes
Before You Buy
- Made for hot tubs with the built-in FROG @ease In-Line cartridge holder (a cap on the spa's top rim) and for the FROG @ease Filter Basket System. FROG lists these models for the @ease In-Line system: Artesian Elite and Artesian Island (optional on Island Elite and South Seas), Marquis Crown (optional on Elite, Vector and Celebrity), Caldera Vacanza and Hot Spring Hot Spot. Hot Spring Freeflow Collection spas are also FROG cartridge ready.
- Not for FROG @ease Floating System dispensers, @ease+ floating systems or swim spa dispensers, which use different cartridges.
- Must be used with an active FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge. SmartChlor alone will not keep the water sanitized.
- Do not use dichlor shock. It adds cyanuric acid, which reduces SmartChlor's effectiveness. Use FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock.
- Switching from bromine? Drain and refill before starting FROG @ease. Switching from dichlor? You can convert without draining if cyanuric acid is below 80 ppm.
- Other test strips misread the SmartChlor reserve as high total chlorine. Use FROG @ease Test Strips.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this 12 pack fit Marquis and Artesian hot tubs?
Yes, on models with the built-in FROG @ease In-Line holder. FROG lists Marquis Crown (optional on Elite, Vector and Celebrity) and Artesian Elite and Island (optional on Island Elite and South Seas). Look for the cap on the top rim of the spa.
Which SmartChlor setting is right for a 300, 400 or 500 gallon spa?
In the In-Line holder, a 300-gallon spa uses setting 2, a 400-gallon spa uses setting 3, and a 500-gallon spa uses setting 4. In the Filter Basket System those become 4, 5 and 6.
Is the blue mineral cartridge included?
No. This pack contains SmartChlor cartridges only. The blue FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge is sold separately and must be in the top slot for the system to work. Over a year you will need about three.
Do I shock every time I change a cartridge?
Yes, that is FROG's recommendation: one packet of FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock with each new SmartChlor cartridge, or once a month. With a 12-pack, keep about a dozen packets on hand for the year.
Is a 12 pack of SmartChlor a full year's supply?
Close to it for many households. At about 3–4 weeks per cartridge, twelve cartridges last roughly 36–48 weeks. Lighter use can stretch that to a year, while heavy use, larger spas or higher dial settings will use them faster.
How many mineral cartridges do I need with a 12 pack?
Plan on three. The blue FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge lasts 4 months, so a year takes three mineral cartridges, with about four SmartChlor cartridges per mineral cycle.
Do SmartChlor cartridges expire in storage?
An expiration date is not specified in the product details we reviewed. Keep unopened cartridges sealed, cool and dry, and use them oldest first. If a cartridge's packaging is damaged, check the label and the Safety Data Sheet before use.
I only use my hot tub occasionally. Will a 12 pack go to waste?
Lighter use makes each cartridge last longer, so a 12-pack simply covers more months. FROG says light users may be able to turn the SmartChlor dial down, as long as they check the Out Indicator on the FROG @ease Test Strips regularly to confirm there is enough SmartChlor in the water.
Can I share a 12 pack between two FROG @ease spas?
Yes, as long as both spas have a FROG @ease In-Line holder or Filter Basket System. Set each cartridge for the spa it goes into, and keep a blue mineral cartridge active in each spa.
What is SmartChlor made of?
According to the Safety Data Sheet, the active ingredients are 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (80–90%) and 1,3-dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin (10–20%), a slow-dissolving chlorine source rather than granular dichlor.
What does self-regulating chlorine mean?
SmartChlor builds a chlorine reserve in the water. When the hot tub needs more free chlorine to kill bacteria, it draws from that reserve, so the level stays around 0.5–1.0 ppm without you adding anything between cartridges.
Does filtration time affect how long the 12 pack lasts?
Yes. Run filtration as your hot tub manufacturer recommends so water moves through the holder. Longer filtration and higher dial settings use cartridges faster, which is worth keeping in mind when planning a year's supply.
Does SmartChlor make the water smell like chlorine?
Much less than typical chlorine. FROG describes the result as Fresh Mineral Water, which is clear and soft-feeling with far less chlorine odor, because free chlorine stays at just 0.5–1.0 ppm.
How can FROG @ease work with 75% less chlorine?
SmartChlor alone would not be enough at 0.5–1.0 ppm. FROG minerals kill bacteria too, so the two together sanitize with up to 75% less chlorine than the 2.0 ppm ANSI minimum for hot tubs. FROG calls the result Fresh Mineral Water: cleaner, clearer and softer.
Are the instructions available in Spanish?
Yes. FROG publishes a Spanish version of the FROG @ease In-Line instructions at frogproducts.com. The English instructions are linked in Product Documents below.
Safety Notes
Handle With Care
- Turn the jets off before opening the In-Line cap. Water can be forced out under pressure.
- SmartChlor is an oxidizer and is corrosive in concentrated form. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing, and do not breathe the dust. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling a damaged cartridge.
- Never mix with other chemicals, especially other chlorine products, bleach, ammonia or alkalis. Keep cartridges dry until use, since contact with water outside the spa can release toxic gas.
- Store unused cartridges sealed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place below 125°F, away from combustible materials, and out of reach of children and pets.
- Drain spent cartridges before disposal and do not reuse them. Read the full label and the Safety Data Sheet below before use.
