Chlorine-Free Sanitizing That Stays Put in Sun and Heat

BAQUACIL® Swimming Pool Sanitizer and Algistat is Step 1 of the BAQUACIL® CDX® System and the foundation of a chlorine-free pool. This liquid sanitizer provides consistent control of bacteria and algae, so your water stays clear, soft and silky without the harsh smell of chlorine.

Unlike chlorine, BAQUACIL chemistry is not broken down by sunlight or heat, which means a steadier sanitizer level through the hottest weeks of summer. The 64 oz (½ gallon) bottle raises a 10,000-gallon pool to the 50 ppm start-up level in one dose.

Gentle on Swimmers, Tough on Bacteria

BAQUACIL is gentler on eyes, skin and hair than chlorine and is kinder to swimsuits and pool liners. Families switch to it for water that feels soft and silky, with no chlorine odor and no red, itchy eyes.

Its 20% polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) formula sanitizes and acts as an algistat, so it is working against bacteria and algae at the same time.

Stable in Sunlight and Summer Heat

Chlorine burns off quickly in strong sun. BAQUACIL Sanitizer and Algistat is not affected by sunlight or heat, so the level you set holds longer between tests.

Test weekly with BAQUACIL 4-Way Test Strips and top up only when the reading drops to 40 ppm or less.

The Core of the 3-Step BAQUACIL CDX System

Use it with BAQUACIL Swimming Pool Oxidizer (Step 2) and BAQUACIL CDX (Step 3) for a simple weekly routine. Together the three products sanitize, oxidize swimmer waste and maintain an oxidizer residual that helps keep water clear all season.

It works in in-ground and above-ground pools with vinyl, fiberglass or plaster finishes.

Convert From Chlorine Without Draining

Most pools can be converted to BAQUACIL in as little as 24 hours without draining. Neutralize the chlorine with BAQUACIL Oxidizer, confirm a zero chlorine reading, then add the start-up dose of sanitizer.

How to Use

  1. Prepare the water: For a newly filled or converted pool, clean the filter and adjust pH to 7.2–7.8. Converting pools must show zero chlorine first.
  2. Add the start-up dose: Add ½ gallon per 10,000 gallons with the pump running to reach 50 ppm. Water may look hazy for 24–48 hours.
  3. Recheck in 24 hours: Test sanitizer and pH with BAQUACIL 4-Way Test Strips and adjust if needed.
  4. Test weekly: Keep the level between 40 and 50 ppm. When it reads 40 ppm or less, add 1 pint per 10,000 gallons for each 10 ppm needed.
  5. Complete the weekly routine: Follow with BAQUACIL Oxidizer (Step 2) and BAQUACIL CDX (Step 3).
  6. Run the filter: Filter 8 to 12 hours a day, and clean the filter at least twice a season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level should BAQUACIL Sanitizer be?

Keep it between 40 and 50 ppm. When a test reads 40 ppm or less, add BAQUACIL Sanitizer and Algistat to bring it back up.

How much BAQUACIL Sanitizer do I add?

Use ½ gallon per 10,000 gallons at start-up. To top up, 1 pint per 10,000 gallons raises the level about 10 ppm.

Can I use chlorine shock in a BAQUACIL pool?

No. Chlorine products are not compatible with BAQUACIL Sanitizer. Use BAQUACIL Swimming Pool Oxidizer as the chlorine-free shock step instead.

Why is my pool hazy after adding BAQUACIL Sanitizer?

A light haze for 24 to 48 hours after a dose is normal. If it lasts, test oxidizer and check the filter, which often needs a chemical cleaning.

Can I use BAQUACIL in my hot tub?

No. The label says not to use it in freestanding spas or hot tubs.

Is BAQUACIL safe for vinyl liners?

Yes. BAQUACIL is designed to be gentle on pool liners and swimsuits, and works in vinyl, fiberglass and plaster pools.

How do I switch from chlorine to BAQUACIL?

Let the chlorine stop, clean the filter, then neutralize the remaining chlorine with 1 gallon of BAQUACIL Oxidizer per 10,000 gallons. When a DPD test reads zero chlorine, add the sanitizer start-up dose and Metal Control.
