Description

Silver SmartChlor Refill for Your FROG @ease In-Line System

The FROG @ease In-Line SmartChlor Replacement Chlorine Cartridge is the silver, pre-filled chlorine cartridge that snaps into the built-in FROG @ease holder on select Hot Spring, Caldera, Marquis and Artesian spas. Working with the blue FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge, it holds free chlorine at a low, steady 0.5–1.0 ppm and kills bacteria two ways with up to 75% less chlorine than the minimum ANSI level for hot tubs.

One cartridge typically lasts about 3–4 weeks in an average 400-gallon hot tub. This 1-pack is a quick way to swap out a spent cartridge, keep a spare on hand, or top up your supply between multi-pack orders.

Low, Steady Chlorine Without Daily Dosing

SmartChlor is a slow-dissolving, self-regulating chlorine. Instead of spiking and crashing like granular chlorine, it builds a chlorine reserve in the water that converts to free chlorine only when the water needs it. With pH between 7.2 and 7.6, free chlorine stays at 0.5–1.0 ppm for the life of the cartridge.

Because the reserve does the work, there is no measuring, no daily dosing, and little reason to adjust the dial once it is set for your spa size.

Two Ways to Kill Bacteria: Minerals Plus SmartChlor

FROG minerals handle part of the sanitizing job, which is why SmartChlor can run at such a low level. The pair creates what FROG calls Fresh Mineral Water: cleaner, clearer and softer-feeling water with less chlorine smell and less wear on swimsuits.

SmartChlor is formulated to work with FROG minerals and is not enough on its own. Always run it with an active FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge.

No Cyanuric Acid to Build Up

Common dichlor granules add cyanuric acid (CYA) with every dose, and in a small, hot body of water it builds up fast and can lead to cloudy, itchy water and earlier drains. SmartChlor adds no CYA, so FROG @ease water stays easier to manage between fill-ups.

To protect that benefit, shock with FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock instead of dichlor.

Shock Once a Month, Not After Every Soak

With FROG @ease, routine shocking drops to once a month or each time you replace the SmartChlor cartridge. Pair the swap with a single-dose packet of FROG Maintain and the whole routine fits on a calendar reminder.

How to Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge

  1. Balance the water first: Bring Total Alkalinity to 80–120 ppm, then pH to 7.2–7.6, and keep Total Hardness at 150–250 ppm. SmartChlor works best, and lasts longest, in balanced water.
  2. Turn the jets off: Never open the In-Line cap while the jets are running. Lift the cap, then push the holder down and turn it 1/8 turn counterclockwise to pull it out.
  3. Remove the spent cartridge: Drain the water out of the old silver cartridge to confirm it is empty, then discard it in the trash or recycle it where available. Do not refill or reuse it.
  4. Unwrap and set the new cartridge: Remove the shrink wrap, hold the bottom and turn the dial to the setting for your hot tub size (see the chart below).
  5. Snap it into the holder: Snap the silver SmartChlor cartridge into the bottom slot marked "Bromine or SmartChlor," lining up the indentation with the raised area on the holder. The blue mineral cartridge stays in the top slot marked "Minerals" at setting #6.
  6. Lock the holder and replace the cap: Line up the holder arrow with the system arrow, push down past the tabs and turn clockwise until it stops. Tug up gently to confirm it is locked.
  7. Shock with FROG Maintain: Add one dose of FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock each time you change the SmartChlor cartridge, or once a month.
  8. Test and track: Test weekly with FROG @ease Test Strips. Replace the cartridge when the top tab is lighter than the SmartChlor Out Indicator on the bottle, and replace the mineral cartridge every 4 months.

SmartChlor Dial Setting Chart

Hot Tub Size In-Line Setting Filter Basket Setting
200–250 gallons 1 3
251–300 gallons 2 4
301–450 gallons 3 5
451–600 gallons 4 6

Set the dial for your spa's water volume. If the cartridge is not empty and chlorine still runs low, turn the dial up one number. If it seems to dispense too fast, turn it down one number.

Compatibility Notes

Before You Buy

  • Made for hot tubs with the built-in FROG @ease In-Line cartridge holder (a cap on the spa's top rim) found on select Hot Spring, Caldera, Marquis and Artesian models, and for the FROG @ease Filter Basket System.
  • Not for FROG @ease Floating System dispensers, @ease+ floating systems or swim spa dispensers, which use different cartridges.
  • Must be used with an active FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge. SmartChlor alone will not keep the water sanitized.
  • Do not use dichlor shock. It adds cyanuric acid, which reduces SmartChlor's effectiveness. Use FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock.
  • Switching from bromine? Drain and refill before starting FROG @ease. Switching from dichlor? You can convert without draining if cyanuric acid is below 80 ppm.
  • Other test strips misread the SmartChlor reserve as high total chlorine. Use FROG @ease Test Strips.

Which FROG Cartridge Do I Need?

Cartridge Where It Goes What It Does
This item: In-Line SmartChlor (silver) Built-in FROG @ease In-Line holder or Filter Basket System Chlorine sanitizer, replace every 3–4 weeks
FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge (blue) Same holder, top slot Required minerals, replace every 4 months

Why Choose the FROG @ease In-Line SmartChlor Cartridge

FROG @ease is one of the simplest ways to keep a chlorine hot tub clean: set the dial once, swap a silver cartridge about once a month, and shock with FROG Maintain at the same time. You get low-chlorine water that feels softer and smells less like chlorine, without cyanuric acid build-up or daily dosing. Shop the full FROG @ease collection for mineral cartridges, multi-packs and test strips, or compare options in Hot Tub Chlorine at HotTubPirate.com.

Ideal For

  • Hot Spring, Caldera, Marquis and Artesian owners with a built-in FROG @ease In-Line holder
  • Hot tub owners who want low chlorine with less smell and softer-feeling water
  • Busy owners who prefer a monthly routine over daily dosing
  • Anyone who wants to avoid cyanuric acid build-up from dichlor
  • Owners who want one spare cartridge on hand between multi-pack orders

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a FROG @ease SmartChlor cartridge last?

About 3–4 weeks in an average 400-gallon hot tub used by two people two or three times a week with about 4 hours of filtration a day. Larger tubs, more bathers, higher dial settings and longer filtration use it up faster. Lighter use can stretch it longer.

What setting should my SmartChlor cartridge be on?

Set it by hot tub size. In the In-Line holder, use 1 for 200–250 gallons, 2 for 251–300, 3 for 301–450 and 4 for 451–600. In the Filter Basket System the settings are 3, 4, 5 and 6 for the same ranges. The blue mineral cartridge always stays on #6.

How do I know when the SmartChlor cartridge is empty?

Dip a FROG @ease Test Strip. If the top tab is lighter than the SmartChlor Out Indicator printed on the bottle, replace the cartridge. To double-check, remove it, drain the water and shake it. If you hear nothing inside, it is empty.

Why do regular test strips show high total chlorine with FROG @ease?

Standard strips read the SmartChlor reserve as total chlorine, so total looks higher than free chlorine. With FROG @ease this is normal and does not mean you need to shock. The reserve shifts to free chlorine as needed. Use FROG @ease Test Strips for accurate readings.

Can I use the SmartChlor cartridge without the mineral cartridge?

No. FROG @ease is designed as a pair, and SmartChlor alone is not enough to sanitize the hot tub. Keep an active blue FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge in the top slot and replace it every 4 months or whenever you drain and refill.

How often should I shock a FROG @ease hot tub?

Shock once a month or each time you replace the SmartChlor cartridge, using FROG Maintain non-chlorine shock. Shock more often after heavy use. Avoid dichlor shock, because its cyanuric acid reduces SmartChlor's effectiveness.

Does SmartChlor contain cyanuric acid?

No. SmartChlor's active ingredients are chlorinated hydantoins, not stabilized dichlor, so it adds no cyanuric acid to your water. That helps avoid the build-up that can make hot tub water cloudy and itchy.

Will this cartridge fit my Hot Spring, Caldera, Marquis or Artesian spa?

It fits models that have the built-in FROG @ease In-Line holder, which shows up as a cap on the spa's top rim. Hot Spring Freeflow Collection and Caldera Fantasy Series spas come FROG cartridge ready. If your spa uses a floating dispenser instead, you need the floating SmartChlor cartridge.

Is the in-line SmartChlor cartridge the same as the floating one?

No. The In-Line cartridge snaps into a built-in holder or filter basket. The FROG @ease Floating System uses a different SmartChlor cartridge that loads into a floating dispenser, and the two are not interchangeable.

What chlorine level does FROG @ease keep in my hot tub?

SmartChlor holds free chlorine at 0.5–1.0 ppm as long as pH stays between 7.2 and 7.6. That is up to 75% less than the 2.0 ppm minimum ANSI recommends for hot tubs. FROG minerals make up the difference.

My water is cloudy or chlorine is low. What should I do?

Shock with FROG Maintain, then check pH and Total Alkalinity, since high pH is the most common cause of low free chlorine. Check whether the cartridge is empty. If it is not empty, turn the dial up one number and retest.

Why does my SmartChlor cartridge run out so fast?

Try lowering the dial by one number or shortening the filtration time. Balanced water and fewer contaminants also help: shower before soaking, rinse swimsuits without detergent, and keep the cover on. Heavy use and larger tubs naturally shorten cartridge life.

How many SmartChlor cartridges do I need per mineral cartridge?

The mineral cartridge lasts 4 months and SmartChlor lasts about 3–4 weeks, so plan on several SmartChlor cartridges per mineral cycle. Keeping a 3-pack plus a spare on hand helps you avoid running out between swaps.

Can I switch to FROG @ease from bromine or dichlor?

From bromine, drain and refill the hot tub first. From dichlor, you can switch without draining as long as cyanuric acid is below 80 ppm. Balance the water and establish 0.5–1.0 ppm free chlorine before installing the cartridges.

Can I store a spare SmartChlor cartridge?

Yes. Keep it sealed in its packaging in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place below 125°F, away from other pool and spa chemicals and out of reach of children and pets.

Safety Notes

Handle With Care

  • Turn the jets off before opening the In-Line cap. Water can be forced out under pressure.
  • SmartChlor is an oxidizer and is corrosive in concentrated form. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing, and do not breathe the dust. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling a damaged cartridge.
  • Never mix with other chemicals, especially other chlorine products, bleach, ammonia or alkalis. Keep the cartridge dry until use, since contact with water outside the spa can release toxic gas.
  • Store sealed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place below 125°F, away from combustible materials, and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Drain spent cartridges before disposal and do not reuse them. Read the full label and the Safety Data Sheet below before use.
