Description
The Fast, No-Measure Start-Up Shock for a Freshly Filled Hot Tub
FROG Jump Start is the start-up shock FROG designed for its own hot tub systems. After you drain, refill and balance the water, one 1.5 oz packet sets the first chlorine level for hot tubs up to 600 gallons and clears out contaminants that came in with the fill water.
This listing is a single packet, which is one complete start-up. Pick one up with every drain and refill, or keep a spare on the shelf so the next fresh fill is ready to go.
Sets the First Chlorine Level in One Pour
Fresh fill water has no sanitizer in it. Before a FROG @ease, FROG Serene or Filter Mate system takes over, the water needs a starting level of chlorine. FROG Jump Start provides it in one packet, with no scoop and no math.
On FROG @ease, that start-up target is 0.5 to 1.0 ppm free chlorine. On FROG Serene, it is 1.0 to 2.0 ppm.
Fizzes Away Before It Reaches the Bottom
Ordinary granular chlorine can sink and sit on the shell. FROG Jump Start is effervescent, so the granules fizz and dissolve as they fall. FROG says that keeps it from settling and bleaching surfaces, and the bubbles show you it is working.
Gives Your New Cartridges a Head Start
Fresh water still carries organic contaminants. When Jump Start handles that first load, your SmartChlor or Serene bromine cartridge does not have to, which FROG says helps the cartridges last longer.
One Packet Per Drain and Refill
Most owners drain and refill about every three to four months. Buying a single packet lets you grab exactly what the next fresh fill needs.

How to Use FROG Jump Start
- Fill and balance first: Fill the hot tub with fresh water, start the circulation and adjust total alkalinity and pH before anything else. FROG suggests waiting about 6 hours between balancing adjustments.
- Cut open one packet: With the circulation running and the cover open, snip the top of a single FROG Jump Start packet. There is nothing to measure.
- Pour it into the water: Pour the whole packet slowly onto the water surface. The granules fizz and dissolve as they sink, so they do not settle on the shell.
- Circulate for 15 minutes: Leave the jets or pump running with the cover open while the chlorine mixes through the water.
- Test, then start your FROG system: Confirm a start-up level on a test strip, then add your FROG @ease, FROG Serene or Filter Mate cartridges and set the dial as the manual directs.
Start-Up Sanitizer Level by FROG System
| Your FROG System | Level to Establish at Start-Up | What Comes Next |
|---|---|---|
| FROG @ease Floating, @ease+ or @ease In-Line | 0.5–1.0 ppm free chlorine | SmartChlor holds a low, steady level. Shock with FROG Maintain monthly or at each cartridge change |
| FROG Serene (bromine) | 1.0–2.0 ppm bromine or chlorine | Bromine cartridge takes over. FROG Maintain once a week |
| FROG Filter Mate | Follow the Filter Mate directions | FROG Maintain once a week |
One packet treats up to 600 gallons. Always follow the directions printed on the packet and in your system manual.
Compatibility Notes
Before You Buy
- One packet treats a hot tub up to 600 gallons. FROG's own pages also mention a 500-gallon figure, so follow the directions printed on your packet.
- Made to start up every FROG hot tub system: FROG @ease Floating, @ease+ Floating, @ease In-Line, FROG Serene bromine and Filter Mate.
- Works whether your ongoing sanitizer is chlorine or bromine. FROG notes the chlorine converts to the new sanitizer once it takes over.
- Do not use it in a biguanide (PHMB) hot tub. FROG lists biguanide as the one sanitizer it is not compatible with.
- Jump Start is dichlor, a stabilized chlorine, so it adds a little cyanuric acid. FROG recommends it at fresh fill, not as a monthly shock on FROG @ease.
- For routine shocking after start-up, use FROG Maintain. For a swim spa, look for FROG Kick-It, the larger start-up shock.
Which FROG Shock Do I Need?
| Product | When to Use It | Chlorine? |
|---|---|---|
| FROG Jump Start (this product) | Start-up shock after you fill and balance fresh water | Yes, sets the first chlorine level |
| FROG Maintain | Ongoing maintenance shock between drains | No, non-chlorine |
| FROG Kick-It | Start-up shock for swim spas up to 3,000 gallons | Yes |
How Long Each Pack Lasts
| Pack | Start-Ups Covered | One Hot Tub, Refilled Every 4 Months | Two Hot Tubs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 packet (this listing) | 1 fresh fill | About 4 months | One start-up |
| 3 Pack | 3 fresh fills | About 1 year | About 6 months |
| 6 Pack | 6 fresh fills | About 2 years | About 1 year |
| 12 Pack | 12 fresh fills | About 4 years | About 2 years |
Estimates assume one packet per drain and refill, with a refill about every 4 months. Refilling more often, or using an occasional packet when balancing runs long, shortens the supply.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is FROG Jump Start?
It is FROG's start-up shock: a single-dose packet of effervescent sodium dichlor that sets an initial chlorine level and removes organic contaminants in a freshly filled hot tub.
What is the difference between FROG Jump Start and FROG Maintain?
Jump Start is the chlorine shock you add once at fresh fill. FROG Maintain is the non-chlorine shock for routine care after that, monthly on FROG @ease or weekly on FROG Serene.
How long after FROG Jump Start can I use the hot tub?
FROG says the hot tub is ready about 15 minutes after you add it. Let it circulate with the cover off, and test before anyone gets in.
How often should I use FROG Jump Start?
Once at each fresh fill. For most owners that is every three to four months, whenever the hot tub is drained, cleaned and refilled.
Is the fizzing normal?
Yes. Jump Start is effervescent on purpose. The bubbles help the chlorine dissolve before it reaches the floor, and FROG says the fizz is your sign it is working.
A packet came with my FROG system. Why do I need another?
Every FROG @ease and FROG Serene floating system includes one packet for its first start-up. Each later drain and refill calls for a new packet.
Will FROG Jump Start bleach my hot tub shell?
It is designed not to. The effervescent granules dissolve before they hit the bottom, which FROG says keeps them from settling and bleaching surfaces.
Do I add Jump Start before or after balancing the water?
After. Balance alkalinity and pH first, then add the packet. The packet itself says to use it after balancing and before starting your FROG system.
What size is one packet?
Each packet holds 1.5 oz (43 g) of granules, which is one dose for a hot tub up to 600 gallons.
What is the part number for FROG Jump Start?
FROG's order code is 01-14-6012 for the single packet. The packet carries EPA Registration No. 53735-12.
Do I need to dissolve it in a bucket first?
No. Pour the granules straight into the circulating water. The effervescent action does the dissolving for you.
Should the cover be open while it circulates?
Yes. Keep the cover off with the jets or pump running for about 15 minutes so the chlorine mixes evenly and the water can air out.
What chlorine level should I see after adding it?
FROG's @ease manual targets 0.5 to 1.0 ppm free chlorine at start-up. FROG Serene's label calls for 1.0 to 2.0 ppm.
Can I use FROG Jump Start with other hot tub chemicals?
Yes, with one exception. FROG lists it as compatible with all hot tub chemicals except biguanide. Add each product on its own, never mixed.
How many start-ups does one packet cover?
One. A single packet is a full start-up dose for one freshly filled hot tub up to 600 gallons.
Safety Notes
Handle With Care
- Danger: toxic if inhaled and causes serious eye damage. Wear chemical splash goggles and gloves when you open and pour the packet.
- Avoid breathing the dust. Open and pour outdoors, low over the water surface, and keep your face away from the packet.
- If in eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes, remove contact lenses if easy to do, keep rinsing and get medical help right away. If inhaled, move to fresh air and call a poison center or doctor.
- This is an oxidizer. Add it only to hot tub water and never mix it with other chemicals, especially ammonia, alkalis, other oxidizers or anything combustible.
- Store packets sealed in their original packaging in a cool, dry place at or below 104°F, locked up and away from children and pets.
- Very toxic to aquatic life. Do not dump unused product, and dispose of empty packets as the label directs.
